A short “cheat sheet” preview:

  1. Know who you‘re talking to. The #1 rule. Award criteria tell you what judges look for. To win, filter your descriptions through those criteria.

  2. Answer the questions. No joke. It‘s very easy to get caught up in your fantastic initiative and unwittingly lose track of exactly what was asked.

  3. Start early. Allow for research, interviews, number crunching, exhibit prep, revisions, approvals, application website snafus, etc.

  4. Tell a good story. Weave a compelling narrative. Add some drama. Yep, drama. After all, you did something important!

  5. Keep it simple. Make your narrative easy to follow. Use plain English. Avoid jargon from your company AND industry.

  6. Be succinct. It’s hard! Eliminate fluff. Get to the point. Use bullet points.

  7. Use metrics wisely. Prove your impact by putting metrics in context. “Revenue increased by X%” is okay; “...beating targets by Y%” is GREAT.
